What is your perspective?
The easy answer is that it is your viewpoint. It is what you see or hear and then more importantly how you interpret or fit it into your world view. It is how we interpret things. Perspective is a way of looking at or thinking about something. It involves the viewpoint, attitude, or opinion from which a person understands and interprets events, situations, or information. It’s the lens through which we view and interpret our surroundings, influencing everything from our personal interactions to our approach to problem-solving. Perspective is not merely a static viewpoint; it’s a dynamic, ever-evolving framework that combines our personal experiences, beliefs, and cognitive processes.
Each person has their own perspective based on their experiences, beliefs, values and biases. So it is no wonder that we have different points of view on everything. One of the most important things to try to find out in any discussion or meeting is what is their perspective. How are they looking at things.
Aspects of Perspective
- Personal Viewpoint: Everyone has their own unique perspective based on their experiences, beliefs, and values. This can influence how they see and react world to the around them. Think about the many cultures and places that can impact a persons perspective. For example in the west where each person must rely on themselves guns are just a part of their normal, whereas in the urban areas where people rely on police for protection they want guns banned. Neither perspective is wrong it is just the result of the culture in which they grew up.
- Cognitive Framework: Perspective is shaped by cognitive processes, including how the brain processes information, makes judgments, and forms opinions. How do you think about things. Is your mind open to other points of view or is it closed based on your perspective.
- Contextual Understanding: It involves understanding things within a specific context, which can include historical, cultural, or situational factors. We naturally jump to conclusions based upon our perspective rather than first trying to understand the context. If you kill someone during wartime than it is ok, but if you shoot someone in your front yard it is not.The context – war or not determines how the situation should be evaluated.
- Empathy and Understanding: Gaining different perspectives can help in understanding others and fostering empathy, as it allows you to see things from their point of view. As you interact with other people and gain additional points of view that change your perspective you empathy and understanding grow.
- Problem Solving: Perspective is crucial in problem-solving, as it can provide new insights and approaches to challenges. If you have only one perspective or everyone’s the same one then you will get only one solution that fits your perspective. Having diverse perspectives and opinions will result in a better result.
Another way to view perspective
Let’s think of your perspective like the frame around a picture where all you can see and understand is what is within the picture frame. If we take the same picture and put a narrower frame around it we can no longer see the old picture, now we see, a smaller picture. If you always grew up in a small town and never went anywhere else like one of my brothers than all you would use to interpret everything around you is the point of view you grew up with. Your picture frame limits your point of view.
And then take someone like me who grew up in Michigan, Florida and Arkansas. My frame and picture will be much bigger. Then add to that several trips to other parts of the world and some exposure to other cultures and it gets even bigger.
The good news is that your perspective isn’t fixed.
Especially today when it is so easy to be exposed to others and their opinions and backgrounds. We can easily get news from Europe, Asia and other countries. As long as we are willing to follow the steps below to allow this new information into our picture, our picture will grow. We can never stop learning and trying to understand other points-of-view.
Developing your perspective: strategies for broadening your picture frame
Broadening one’s perspective and embracing different viewpoints is a lifelong journey that enriches both your personal and professional growth. One effective way to develop a more comprehensive viewpoint is by engaging with diverse literature and media. Reading books, watching films, and exploring art from different cultures and backgrounds can expose you to a wide range of experiences and ideas that differ from your own. This exposure not only broadens your understanding but also fosters empathy, allowing you to connect more deeply with people from various walks of life.
Another powerful strategy for expanding your perspective is travel. Visiting new places, whether near or far, can be a transformative experience. Travel exposes you to different cultures, customs, and ways of life, offering a firsthand glimpse into the diversity of human experience. By stepping out of your comfort zone and engaging with local communities, you gain insights into the unique challenges and triumphs of others. This direct interaction can dispel stereotypes and misconceptions, fostering a deeper appreciation for the complexity of the world and the people within it. Even if physical travel is not an option, virtual exploration through documentaries, online forums, and language learning platforms can offer similar benefits.
Seeking out and valuing different opinions is also crucial for developing a broader perspective. Engage in conversations with people who hold views that differ from your own. This could include friends, colleagues, or even strangers you meet in daily life. Active listening and open-mindedness are essential in these interactions. Rather than defending your own position, strive to understand the reasoning, context, and experiences behind others’ viewpoints. This will enrich your understanding but will also help you recognize the biases and limitations in your own thinking.
Empathy plays a pivotal role in truly understanding others and broadening your perspective. Cultivating empathy involves not just acknowledging different viewpoints but also trying to feel what others feel. Put yourself in their shoes, imagine their experiences, and consider the emotions that drive their actions. Empathy not only enhances your ability to navigate complex situations but also makes you a more compassionate and effective communicator. By integrating these strategies into your life, you will be better equipped to make informed decisions, resolve conflicts, and build bridges across differences.
Perspective and problem-solving: seeing challenges in new ways
Perspective plays a crucial role in problem-solving by offering fresh viewpoints that can uncover previously unseen solutions. When we approach a challenge from a single angle, we often limit ourselves to a narrow range of potential resolutions. However, by adopting diverse perspectives, we can broaden our understanding and discover innovative ways to tackle issues. This approach not only enhances creativity but also fosters a more comprehensive and effective problem-solving process.
Considering multiple perspectives enhances analytical thinking and decision-making abilities. When we look at a problem from various angles, we are better equipped to identify underlying issues, anticipate potential obstacles, and evaluate the feasibility of different solutions. This multifaceted approach allows for a better understanding of the problem, enabling us to make better decisions. By considering the implications of our choices from different viewpoints, we can mitigate risks and maximize the positive impact of our actions.
Global perspectives: understanding cultural differences and similarities
Cultural backgrounds play a profound role in shaping our viewpoints and behaviors. Our cultural norms, values, and traditions greatly influence how we perceive and interact with the world. For instance, what may be considered polite in one culture could be seen as rude in another.
Recognizing and addressing cultural biases and stereotypes is crucial for fostering mutual respect and preventing misunderstandings. These biases can often be unconscious, stemming from our upbringing and societal influences. By becoming aware of our own cultural biases, we can strive to create a more inclusive environment.
Cross-cultural communication and education are pivotal in bridging these gaps. Through learning about different cultures, we can develop empathy and gain insights into the experiences of others. Successful collaborations and initiatives that have effectively brought diverse cultures together offer valuable lessons. These endeavors demonstrate practical strategies for fostering cultural sensitivity and inclusivity. By embracing and valuing diverse perspectives, we can create harmonious and inclusive societies that thrive on mutual respect and understanding.
Steps to change and grow your perspective
Only you can change or expand your perspective, change your viewpoint, change the way you think, be aware of context, have empathy and increased understanding, and choose to get everyone input to reach the right answer. So:
- Change your Personal Viewpoint: You must be open to hearing and finding the truth in other’s viewpoints. Everyone has their own unique perspective based on their experiences, beliefs, and values. This influences how they see and react world to the around them. You have to examine your Perspective and realize it can change. Travel, read and listen to different viewpoints and ask yourselves why.
- Change your Cognitive Framework: Your perspective is shaped by cognitive processes, including how the brain processes information, makes judgments, and forms opinions. Do you operate from a fixed mindset- I am right and they must be wrong or a growth mindset- everyone has some of the truth.
- Gain Contextual Understanding: Nothing occurs in a a vacuum you must understand things within a specific context, which can include historical, cultural, or situational factors. Until we learn to understand where others are coming we will never reach true equality.
- Learn Empathy and Understanding: Gaining different perspectives will help in understanding others and fostering empathy, as it allows you to see things from their point of view. As rewatch news stories of brutality to others based on their race or economic situation we must become more empathetic and grow our empathy.
- Remember to get more input for Problem Solving: No one person has the right answer but if our perspective closed to others input we are never going to solve the complex problems we face today. Your perspective is crucial in problem-solving, as it can provide new insights and approaches to challenges if it remains open to learn from others.
