Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech. Benjamin Franklin

I had a typical week of meetings, Physical Therapy, and resting. Things seem to be winding down as the holiday season approaches. I had a CT scan of my heart arteries, and all came out normal, whatever that means. Normal is one of our English words that is always subject to interpretation.

“The journey is not about becoming anything, but to unbecoming who you are not.” — Paulo Coelho.
Our life is a journey. We start as cute, cuddly baby humans, and then as we grow, we become hopefully humane humans. We long to be at the top of the heap, to be a hero, to be rich or famous because that is what our parents and the movies think we should become. But few of us do. And we don’t need to be heroes or rich to become successful and happy.
Paulo Coelho is telling us that the journey is something else. It is not about becoming rich and famous or something you are not. It is about finding yourself. How many people do you know who have chosen their career because that is what their parents did and ended up miserable? We, as parents, must allow and encourage our children to pursue their own choices. Their journey will not be smooth or easy, but with us as cheerleaders and support, they can find themselves. And their journey must be their own.
Paulo also tells us that we are the curators of our souls, and we must lose the parts that do not support who we want to become. It is up to us to regularly reflect on what we are becoming and why and then to rid ourselves of those parts that keep us from becoming who we want to be. As we remember, we must reflect on our wants vs needs. When I was young, I wanted to be a smoke jumper, a basketball star, and many other things. But I found out that I am a better helper and enabler.

1. Are you on the journey you want to be on?
2. What baggage are you carrying that you need to discard?
3. Do you want or need to change the direction of your journey?
4. What is holding you back?
1. Make a list of what is inhibiting your journey.
2. Reflect on this list and consider what you aren’t facing.
3. Identify the baggage you no longer wish to carry on your journey forward.
