Considering Wisdom #64

A weekly newsletter from BobBarnardnm.com

Please share this with your friends so we can encourage others to consider wisdom.

Thoughts on the intersection of Society/Culture, Productivity/You, and Wisdom/Knowledge.

Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech. Benjamin Franklin

My time off from writing and publishing:
It has been a busy year of traveling and conferences, and I have forgotten that I can say no. My writing has suffered, but I am starting again. I hope you and your friends will rejoin me. I think I am going to alternate quotes with whatever is on my mind for the week. I hope that is acceptable.

Wisdom for the week.

People in power are trying to convince us that the villain in our American story is each other. But that is not our story. That is not who we are. That's not our America. Our United States of America is not about us versus them. It's about us, the people! Camila Alves

As we reflect on the 4th of July and our upcoming presidential election, it is a time to look backward and forward for me. I am approaching my 80th birthday, which means I have seen wars in Vietnam and Korea, the growth of equal treatment of all people, a world that made progress in helping each other, and now, unfortunately, this all seems to be unraveling. A nation of laws seems to be becoming a fragmented nation where each state can do whatever it wants to do, even if it is a national problem. We seem to be regressing and forgetting what we have overcome in the past 50 years.

The ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East will ultimately solve nothing except perhaps lead us into WW III. By now, it should be obvious to all that War is not the answer. We must learn to find long-term answers in other ways. We need to accept diversity rather than abhor it. We are all one people on a giant spaceship that requires everyone to work together to keep the spaceship whole.

For the US, we have forgotten all that we have learned in the last 60 years. Camila Alves reminds us that the US became great by increasing equality and freedom for all, not by considering each other enemies, as one of the presidential candidates would have us believe. We need to reflect on what has made us great and swing the pendulum back in that direction, not move towards more anarchy and oligarchical rule.

Remember, this Fourth of July is about us, the people (in total), not us and them.

Questions to ponder:
1. What do you see when you think back and look forward?
2. Are you sick of the news?
3. What does our voting choice mean?
4. Do you believe we are at a fork in the road? One leading to anarchy and one back to democracy?
