Notes on Quotes December 14

We are in the middle of the holiday season. Some are reflecting on how their past year has gone, while others are beginning to think about their intentions, goals, or resolutions for next year.
"What you pay attention to grows. Pay attention to your envy, and it will grow. Pay attention to your gratitude, and it will grow. The choice is yours." — Karen Salmansohn
This is a foundational idea for all of us. As we reflect on the past year, the things we didn’t pay enough attention to were the ones that didn’t get done or didn’t turn out the way we wanted. So take this quote to heart as you plan next year: Do you have the time or bandwidth to pay attention to all you say you want to do? Will you be able to focus enough on it all? Make your intentions/resolutions/goals realistic and doable. Don’t decide to spend two hours a day at the gym to get into better shape. Start small with half an hour a day and increase by half an hour every two weeks.
I always think I will write and publish two articles a week. Last year, I didn’t do very well. Maybe for this upcoming year, I need to change that intention or how I allocate my attention during each week. I can write one article a week or maybe publish every two weeks.
Richard Feynman once said, “You’re under no obligation to remain the same person you were a year ago, a month ago, or even a day ago. You are here to create yourself, continuously.”
These two quotes go together very nicely. Most of us want to improve or become a better person than we were the year before. We are on a path of continuous creation of who we are going to be. This ability to change from who you were to who you want to be requires attention and focus. Apply the requisite attention to the things that will make you a better person and you will see improvement. Don’t pay attention and nothing will change.

Questions to ponder:
  1. What is the most important thing about you that you want to improve?
  2. What do you have to do to make that change?
  3. Who do you want to become by next year?

Things to do this week

  1. Make a list of a few things you want to change.
  2. Write down how much attention or time each week you are going to dedicate to achieving this change.
  3. Check on yourself each month and see how you are doing. If you didn’t do too well at the start, improve in the next period
