Thoughts on the intersection of Society/Culture, Productivity/You, and Wisdom/Knowledge.

Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech. Benjamin Franklin

My two WEEKS

During the last two weeks, I was packing for my vacation with my daughter in New Zealand, flying for 15 hours, waiting in an airport for 8 hours, and then taking my final flight to arrive in Wellington. Surprisingly, all my luggage arrived with me, and the flights were on time, but all were full.

During my first full week in New Zealand, I have been trying to get acclimated to the new time zone and recover from the flight. Farm life revolves around grass mowing for 1-2 hours per day, working in the greenhouse (who needs a sauna), and picking vegetables and fruit.

I can see why farmers work from dawn to dusk because the work is never done.

We had a lovely Christmas. Took a whole day off.

Considering Wisdom.

The world doesn't need more talking. It requires more listening. Maxime Lagacé

This is so true on many levels, but not all. This quote highlights the difficulties we have in communicating with each other. We are too busy talking or preparing to talk rather than listening.

Without a doubt, we need to listen and ask questions to understand what the speaker is trying to say. Listening does not mean barely listening while your mind concocts a rebuttal. Ito understand better better understand what is being said. Listening means asking thoughtful questions to clearly understand what is being said. After we clearly understand what is being said, we can share our opinion.

Listening is half of the effective communication between people. Being a good listener requireIn addition, goodtention and empathy. Good listeners listen with an open mind. We don't discount what the person is saying because of a generalized label society has placed on them. Another sign of allowings is the ability to allow silence while the speaker is formulating what they are going to say. As the listener, you shouldn't feel the need to fill the silence.

Talking is another story. Some people talk too much. They like to hear the sound of their voice, whether they have something substantial to add. There are so many ways that we need to engage in meaningful communication to enhance understanding rather than hear or assume a label and shut down. The talking we don't need to hear is the empty words of tv news anchors and so-called opinion makers. Talking for the purpose of separation or to provide misinformation is something we can also do without.

Talking should be about conveying ideas as clearly as you can to another person or group. Listening when questions are asked and responding with clarity.

Talking is not chanting slogans or making demeaning statements about the speaker. It is about communicating ideas and feelings.
