Thoughts on the intersection of Society/Culture, Productivity/You, and Wisdom/Knowledge.

Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech. Benjamin Franklin

My WEEK

Busy as always but uneventful until Saturday night. I went to Roswell, NM, for a conference, and things got interesting. Saturday night, I tripped and landed on a curb face-first. As you would expect, the ground and curb won. I went to the ER, and after a CT scan found out I had a slight break in my nose but no concussion. I’m healing quickly, but I look a little like a raccoon right now.

Considering Wisdom.

Wisdom for the week.

Be satisfied with even the smallest progress and treat the outcome of it all as unimportant. Marcus Aurelius
Do you become frustrated by how slowly it takes some things to get done? I do! We are so focused on the end goal, solving the problem, or becoming something that we forget it isn't a one-step process. It takes a lot of little steps to reach a goal or accomplish something important, and we forget this. This is what Marcus Aurelius is pointing out in his quote above. We need to focus and be satisfied with the progress we are making. Rejoice in each step forward. Don't wait until the end is reached.

If you focus on each step and gain satisfaction in your accomplishment, you will be somewhat surprised when you reach the goal. However, if we continuously concentrate only on the outcome, we will add stress to our lives and may never reach our desired goal because we slow ourselves down and get frustrated with our lack of progress. Therefore, Marcus Aurelius tells us to change our focus; progress matters each day, not whether we have reached our goal.

So, to change your focus to progress, break your goal into bite-sized steps and rejoice each time you progress by completing one. So many of society's problems today are large and complex but can be solved by taking continuous small steps.
