Thoughts on the intersection of Society/Culture, Productivity/You, and Wisdom/Knowledge.

Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech. Benjamin Franklin

My Week:

This week: January has whizzed by. Not much is going on as people are getting over the holidays. But it is starting to pick up.

Wisdom for the week.

  • The wisdom quote for this week.

Epictetus has the perfect question for us this week:
“How long are you going to wait before you demand the best for yourself?

This question from the Philosopher Epictetus raises many questions for us this week. First, what is our best self? Our best self is comprised of our body, mind, and spirit. Each of these must be in harmonious balance with the other for us to become our best selves. This is obviously a goal for us to strive for rather than something we will achieve throughout our lives. But let's examine each.

Our body: This speaks of our physical well-being. It relates to exercise and eating right. For exercise, I have to admit that I did exercise a long time ago but not in a balanced manner. I played sports as a young man and then refereed Basketball for about 20 years, resulting in quick spurts of exercise but not a balanced regimen focused on muscle building and cardiovascular exercise. Now that I am rapidly approaching 80, I have become way more sedentary than I should. Secondly, we need to eat carefully. As a single person cooking for myself, I find that having vegetables, salad, and the main course is beyond my grasp.

Our Mind: This aspect requires that our minds be focused, our thoughts and decisions be clear, and we develop and maintain a curious mindset. We must become truth seekers and remain interested and involved throughout our lives.

Our Spirit: we need to know and understand our purpose and interconnectedness with the world. It is no longer enough to think of ourselves as being a member of a small community, we must accept that we are all a part of the world and act accordingly.

Questions to ponder:
  1. Do I have these three phases in balance?
  2. What can I change to move into balance?
  3. What does it mean to be a truth seeker?
Actions for the week

    1. Start a journal and see how your answers to the questions differ after a week of contemplation.
    2. Keep notes and see where you are out of balance now and identify ways to correct that.
