Thoughts on the intersection of Society/Culture, Productivity/You, and Wisdom/Knowledge.

Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech. Benjamin Franklin

My WEEK

My WEEK
The best way to describe the last two weeks is out of control. I averaged three days of zoom and in-person meetings and barely kept up with the have-to-dos for others. Hence no newsletter. I hope this coming week things will return to normal, and I can return to my regular writing schedule. This newsletter is step one. How has your year begun?

Considering Wisdom.

Wisdom for the week.
Learning to ignore things is one of the great paths to inner peace. Robert J. Sawyer

The chaos of our lives causes stress and overwhelm. Many wisdom quotes point out, as does Robert Sawyer that we must get in control of ourselves to find inner peace, a stress-free existence, and the ability to get the right things done. A part of this is learning to know what to ignore. As much as I would like to, I can’t do everything that comes up. I’m sure you have the same problem.

We are all human and want to do what others want. But you can’t. Life is too short to do only what everyone else wants. Unfortunately, I haven’t learned to say no and ignore others, but it is time I learned. I don’t have to attend every meeting or zoom conference. None of us are indispensable. So, today my primary task is attending a Rotary Club meeting 70 miles away. Tomorrow it will be to golf with my friends. Then I can work on taxes, budgets, etc.
Since I can’t say no, my solution has been to reframe my life into days of tasks and not worry about the rest. I do this by getting up each morning and looking at the opportunities, a euphemism for daily functions, and deciding what I will do. Keeping in mind how much energy I have that day. Then I ignore the rest. They won’t go away, but they are out of my head for the day. This seems to work for now if I know my priorities. Let me know how you handle this in your life. How do you control your chaos?

Questions for the Week

1. Do you check and reflect on your day to find those things you can ignore in the future?
2. Are they things you have added to your life?
3. Were they added by others?
4. What happens if you ignore them?

Actions for the week
1.
1. List all the things you do regularly in your life that you can ignore.
2. Check the ones you don’t want to do.
3. Let the people involved know you aren’t doing them anymore.
