Considering Wisdom #62

Please share this with your friends so we can encourage others to consider wisdom.

Thoughts on the intersection of Society/Culture, Productivity/You, and Wisdom/Knowledge.

Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech. Benjamin Franklin

My Week.

I had a quiet two weeks and was able to loaf and get a start on some upcoming requirements (taxes). I had Christmas dinner with friends (twice) and a quiet New Year’s Eve, except for the half-hour from 1145 to 1215am. The rest of this month’s calendar is starting to fill already. I hope you enjoyed your holiday time as well.

Wisdom for the week.
“Ask yourself at every moment, ‘Is this necessary?”

The new year is like the Phoenix arising from the ashes of 2023. As we start 2024, we must realize that last year is over. The good, the bad, and the ugly are all gone forever. We are adding a new section to our life’s journey which we call 2024. The slate is clean and ready for us to write our script and live a new life.
So, what is it going to be: more of the same or more contemplative and controlled by you?

The author suggests that we should take more control of our lives and activities and make sure we only do what is necessary. What is necessary will vary for each of us. In my last job, before I retired, I lost sight of this admonition and was a workaholic. I traveled almost every week and lost sight of what my priorities should have been – family first and work second.

This year I am going to begin a paring process so that I only do what is necessary. Unfortunately, for me, since I can’t say no and believe in helping where a need arises, I have about seven jobs. Maybe I will learn to say no and delegate in the future. Although, I’m not holding my breath. I wish you better luck in your endeavors this year to do only what you feel is necessary!

Since this is the first newsletter of the new year, I would be remiss if I didn’t write a couple of sentences about goals and resolutions. It is so true what the Cheshire cat told Alice- if you don’t know where you are going then it doesn’t matter which road you take (paraphrased.)

So, you need to decide where you are going for the new year- whether you use goals, intentions, or OKR it doesn’t matter. But what does matter is that if you intend to get there, wherever it may be, then you must take regular actions, it is a necessity.

Have a happy and stress-free 2024 and just do what is necessary!

Questions to ponder:

1. What are your goals, resolutions, or intentions for 2024?
2. Are they achievable?
3. Are they time-bound?

Actions for the week
1. Write down your goals, resolutions, or intentions for 2024.
2. Define the first 3-4 actions you need to take as you are pursuing each.
3. When you finish the first 4 actions, write down the next 4, etc.
4. The next thing you know you will have achieved your goal.
