Thoughts on the intersection of Society/Culture, Productivity/You, and Wisdom/Knowledge.

Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech. Benjamin Franklin

My Week:
My week has been fairly quiet, although numerous small tasks keep cropping up to distract me from my writing schedule. I tell myself I want to finish an article like this one- date changed from 18th to the 23rd. I'll work on getting more regular.

Wisdom for the week.
"To experience peace does not mean that your life is always blissful. It means that you are capable of tapping into a blissful state of mind amidst the normal chaos of a hectic life." ~ Jill Bolte Taylor

Finding Peace Amidst the Chaos

No one can identify these times as peaceful. We are bombarded daily by bad news, whether personally as a friend told me Tuesday that she is undergoing chemotherapy for Cancer, nationally as we hear almost daily about another lash out by Trump, or internationally when we hear about the wars around the globe. Life is anything but peaceful these days.

However, Jill Bolte Taylor reminds us that, despite the chaos around us, we can lead a blissful life by turning inward and cultivating a state of mind that brings us joy. It is not the chaotic state we live in that determines our peace or blissfulness; it is our state of mind.

True peace is a state of mind; it isn't the absence of chaos; it is the way we respond to the chaotic times in which we live. Bliss/peace is not uninterrupted happiness and a problem-free life because this is not something we can obtain. If you believe bliss or peace is a goal you reach and then you are there for the rest of your life, you are mistaken. This concept- I've reached bliss and now I'm there-will only lead to unhealthy emotions ( sadness, depression, frustration, and disappointment).

Having a peaceful life means learning how to recognize and manage these unhealthy emotions when they arise. We can examine the source of the emotion and ask ourselves, was this something I could control or not? If not, release the destructive emotions and replace them with self-understanding.

Here are some ways to help you tap into a sense of peace.
  • Mindfulness and meditation: These are methods that help you take the time to reflect on each emotion that displaces peace and determine the cause, and then park it in your bank of inadequate responses.
  • Focusing on Gratitude: Emphasize the good in your life to create a barrier against emotions that can take you away from peace and bliss.
  • Connecting with nature or art
  • Engaging in a hobby
It is in our best interest to cultivate inner peace because this will:
  • Reduce our stress and anxiety.
  • Improve our emotional regulation.
  • Increase our resilience and ability to cope
  • Enhance our relationships
  • Create a greater overall well-being.
True peace is not about avoiding chaos but about developing the capacity to find calm within it. We find calm by learning to better control our minds and their responses to the chaos around us.

Questions to ponder:
  1. Do you feel true Peace?
  2. Is a peaceful mind worth striving for?
  3. How can I transition from chaos and negative thoughts to peace?

Actions for the week

  1. You can start a gratitude journal.
  2. Think of all the things that could happen to make your future different than what you expect.
  3. Consider how to cultivate a more peaceful mind, free from worry.
