032 Considering Wisdom

Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech. Benjamin Franklin

MY WEEK

My week was filled with writing, meetings, usually on Zoom, and getting up to speed on some new activities. The new activities include studying copywriting for my freelance business and studying a new fund accounting application for a new position at the annual quaker meeting (soon to be treasurer.) This will be challenging with the traveling I have planned for this year, although the internet will be everywhere. Ended my week with a flu shot and the covid vaccine. Two sore shoulders.

Considering Wisdom.

"Everyone can perform magic, everyone can reach his goals if he is able to think, if he is able to wait, if he is able to fast." Hermann Hesse

We are in the last quarter of 2022, and it is time to review and assess our progress on our goals. I have to admit, due to procrastination and a fear of selling myself, I have done abysmally. But there is still time to reflect and progress on those important goals. We have three months to take the actions needed to meet our goals. Herman Hesse states in the wisdom thought above that everyone can reach their goals.

The first key to meeting your goals is defining them so they are clear, specific, measurable, and have an end date. Secondly, we must focus on the next action needed rather than how close we are to achieving the goal. Thirdly, we must take the next action and repeat this process until we reach our goal.

But Hessee also says we have to think and reflect on what these actions are that we need to perform, we need to be patient and wait for the moment before we act. Regular reflection is a necessary part of goal achievement.

We must never forget that achieving our goal may not be necessary as the year progresses and our needs change.

My primary goal for this year was to get a freelance writing job. Sounds easy, but it hasn't been for me. As I reflect on the why, I realize that I am averse to selling, even myself. To get past this, I am taking a copywriting course to better understand my salesman role and to develop a portfolio of my writing.

Thinking and reflecting on why something is or is not working is integral to the goal achievement process. Reflection will also help you identify those things that get in your way and prevent achievement. Some examples might be the fear of failure- no one will hire me; fear of the unknown- what am I getting myself into?
Reflect on your remaining goals for the year and see which ones you should work on for the last quarter.

Questions for the week

  1. What goals did I achieve this year?
  2. which ones didn't get finished?
  3. Is this because they weren't well defined or was it something I did or didn't do?

Actions for the week

  1. Review all your goals for this year.
  2. 2. for those that aren't completed, list the next action step you need to take to move towards completion.
