Thoughts on the intersection of Society/Culture, Productivity/You, and Wisdom/Knowledge.

Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech. Benjamin Franklin

My Week:
This was a good week. I'm busy, but I now have more time to do what I want. I have written and published two online articles and submitted another to a magazine for consideration.

Wisdom for the week.
Never let your future frighten you. Marcus Aurelius

Do you spend a lot of time worrying about the future or dwelling on the past? I have had times when a company I worked for went through a series of downsizings, and I worried that I would be one of the ones cut. It didn't happen, but I wasted time and mental energy worrying just the same.

Musk and the President are canceling whole departments and agencies. No doubt, many of our government workers have been through similar periods of worry when Musk and the President have canceled entire departments and agencies. Marcus Aurelius advises us not to let the future scare us for two reasons: one, it isn't here and may never arrive, and two, it is out of our control. Similarly, we shouldn't dwell on the past because it is over and we can't change it.

It is difficult not to worry about the future in these tumultuous times. We have the military in armoured vehicles on our Southern borders. We have universities attacked because of their diversity and inclusiveness policies. We see our institutions of higher education having government funds withheld for no apparent reason. We see our legal system under attack and our Constitution ignored.
However, I can only speak out, vote, and support those who are as dismayed as I am, because these issues are beyond my control. It is up to the American to be heard. Worrying doesn't help.

Questions to ponder:
  1. Why do you worry about the future?
  2. Do you still dwell on your past?
  3. Remember that you fear isn't the worst thing that can happen, doing nothing is?

Actions for the week

  1. Take your biggest worry about the future and write it down.
  2. Think of all the things that could happen to make your future different than what you expect.
  3. Consider how you can have a more peaceful mind without worry.
