Thoughts on the intersection of Society/Culture, Productivity/You, and Wisdom/Knowledge.

Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech. Benjamin Franklin

My WEEK

This week was interesting. It started with realizing that my priorities were messed up. I had scheduled a dental appointment on my golf day and fixed that. Then I spent a great deal of time on the phone to ensure I would have my medications in hand for my six-week trip to New Zealand. I finally got notice that I would be able to get my medicines in time for my trip on Friday. Dealing with insurance is both a blessing and a curse. A benefit is that I have good insurance and a curse because they are so absolutely rule-bound. Sprinkled around all this fun, I had many meetings and published articles.

Considering Wisdom.

Wisdom for the week.
“The journey is not about becoming anything, but to unbecoming who you are not.” — Paulo Coelho.

What metaphor do you use when you think about your life? Is it as the author Paulo Coelho uses above about life being a journey or is it something else? I can think of a few others; life is like a sea voyage. It is like a trip. It is like a road we are traveling. The reality is that they all work.

Most of us think of our lives as having a beginning (birth) and an end (death). However, some would argue that death isn’t the end, just the end on earth. I find some comfort in this myself.

I think of my journey from knowing nothing to a glimmer of wisdom. It is not a journey that leads to success because success is fleeting and difficult to define. Success depends on who you are and what you want to believe it is. It is about becoming something. But it is not something you can acquire by buying things or loyalty.

My journey has been full of opportunities to live in many places, help others achieve their goals, and grow in understanding of what being human means.

Is your journey a road that goes from nothing to material riches? This journey can be hurtful to you if you use or destroy others because, in the process, you destroy yourself. The road metaphor is the one I like best. Sometimes it is straight as far as the eye can see. Other times it is mountainous and twists and turns as you face life’s struggles. But we travel it regardless. What matters is our why and the attitude we carry along.

Or is your journey like that of a young lady I know who is dedicated to helping the homeless become all they can be? She helps them move from being homeless to being housed. She spreads the story.
