Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech. Benjamin Franklin

This has been a relatively busy week. I've had several Zoom meetings, tons of emails, and I've been trying to write and publish. It's Saturday, and this will go out today. Well i didn't make it and it is Thursday and here it comes.

“World peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not just the mere absence of violence. Peace is, I think, the manifestation of human compassion.” Dalai Lama
WORLD PEACE, What a novel concept. It seems farther away today than it did when I was born, when we defeated the Nazi authoritarian regime of Adolf Hitler. No one at that time could imagine that we would be suffering under a new authoritarian regime developing in the US. But that is precisely what is happening. A news item from today said that President Trump has fired the Labor Department person who reported the labor statistics for the week. It is his way or the highway.
However, the Dalai Lama is saying that world peace comes only from inner peace and compassion for others. It is hard to be at peace when I see what is happening in our country and the world, but it is something I strive for. What it means to me is that I am at peace with what I can control, how I react, and how I let events affect me. I don't imagine that someone is mad at me because that is a bad thought, since I can't know how they feel about me. Why should I make up stories in my mind that aren't real?
The single best way to keep a peaceful mind is to turn off all the sources of negativity that abound today: news, TV, news radio, newspapers, etc. All they are are propaganda machines. We have to quit letting all the negativity in our minds. We can't control it, and if we let it in, it will eventually control us. If you need to keep up with the news, you can find a balanced source such as Tangle or Nice News. Others try to be balanced with less propaganda. But keep in mind that printed newspapers are controlled by their publishers and owners. This may seem like we are burying our heads in the sand, but it helps keep us sane.
The second-best way is not to argue with someone who has opposing views. You won't change them. The best you can do is ask questions and try to understand them better.
Thirdly, consider your perception. Do you see the world as falling apart? Or do you see it as going through a phase that will change for the better in the future? Perception is about how your mind sees an event. Let's say trump cancels Medicaid. Do you perceive this a devastating forever change or do you perceive it as a negative that can be changed back in the future?
How do you frame events? Do you have a growth mindset that says I can learn from this, or do you have a fixed mindset that says it is always someone else's fault?

Do I have a fixed or growth mindset?

How can I transition from chaos and negative thoughts to peace?

You can start a gratitude journal.

Don't listen to or read biased news.

Think of all the things that could happen to make your future different than what you expect it to be today.

Consider how to cultivate a more peaceful mind, free from worry.
