Thoughts on the intersection of Society/Culture, Productivity/You, and Wisdom/Knowledge.

Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech. Benjamin Franklin

My Week.
Meetings are starting to slow as we enter the high holiday season-Christmas and New Year's Day, both falling on Mondays this year. In the US, businesses will slow as their employees take advantage of the two three-day weekends by taking extended vacations. Since I’m always on vacation, albeit very busy, I don't have to take time off. Every day is both a vacation and a day of work. The myth of being less busy in retirement is just that. A myth.

Wisdom for the week.
"Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending."

Maria Robinson

As much as we would like, we can’t get a do-over. We can only forgive ourselves and forget it. We don’t need to think of it as having skeletons in our closet- Our past is behind us. It is a closed book we don’t need to dwell on because, as the author says, “Nobody can go back and start over. We can only go forward and write a new ending to our lives.

We have all heard, “Today is a new day.” But it is only new if you close the past. If you dwell on the past or how you think others feel about you, then it will be hard for today to be new – it will have lots of excess baggage to distract you.

To do this effectively, we have to build and strengthen our focus muscles in our minds. It's pretty hard for me since I don’t have to do anything daily. We strengthen our focus muscles by becoming more mindful and meditating. If you don’t learn to focus and control your mind, you will have a hard time letting each day be a new beginning in your life journey.

Another thing we need to do is reflect on each day and determine how we did. Not to beat ourselves up but to learn from our daily distractions and improve our positive habits.

And finally, always keep an open and receptive mind. What we think we know isn’t always the truth or the only way to think. If you are open to others’ ideas, you will find that life can be more fulfilling and enriching.

Forget the past. Focus on today. Reflect and learn!

Have a Happy Holiday Season!

Questions to ponder:

1. What baggage from the past is on your mind?
2. How does this affect your focus?
3. How can you convince yourself to pack it away and start a new day without it because you sent it to lost luggage?

Actions for the week

1. Notice and write in your journal when you lost focus today and why.
2. Consider and list strategies to stay focused when this happens.
3. Meditate and reflect daily to control your wandering mind.
